Crugian Bach Stone Circle
Crugian Bach Stone Circle submitted by cerrig : This is looking South East, showing the small slab stone overlooking the centre stone, and the peak of Gamriw with it's out of site cairns, over the skyline beyond. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Stone Circle in Powys. Crugian Bach is a newly discovered stone circle. It was found by Archaeological field workers only a few years ago. It's a typical Welsh circle of small stones, with a big slab in the South East "corner". The tallest stone still standing being just over knee high. It is quite rare in having a centre stone, possibly at one time standing but now a recumbent slab.

One of the circle stones on the North East is another small slab type stone, about 1 foot tall, aligned on the centre stone and also on a peak to the South. On this peak , unsited from the circle, are the cairns of Gamriw. Along this line in the valley beyond is the stone row of Saith Maen(Rhayader)
About 50 meters to the North West is a leaning standing stone, about 3 feet tall. Noticeably triangular in section. If stood up straight the flat sides would point to various monuments; namely the circle, Drygarn Fawr cairns, and another very large recumbent to the South East.
It should be noted that the official grid references for this circle are hundreds of meters out at best, and the only way i found it was by matching a photo to the surroundings. The grid reference given here is off my GPS. The circle is easily missed, as reeds cover the taller stones.

It sounds like the weather i had the first time i tried to find it Sem. On a nice day it's a much more pleasant place to be, and easier to look around. Even then it was only luck that i found it, as it's fairly well camouflaged till you are right on top of it. There is a meter tall standing stone close to it that attracted me initially, otherwise i would have walked past it.
I found the Clwyd/Powys archaeo. trust newsletter with a photo of the circle and the hills to the East, and matched this to the surroundings. The grid's from Cadw, RCAHMW and Clwyd/ Powys are all different and all wrong by hundreds of meters. Are they trying to hide it?

Nice one Cerrig.
When I tried to find it last year, the weather was mist and drizzle. I don't think the official map ref being out caused my failure as I couldn't even see my GPS 'cause of the rain.
All the best
Sem
