The Bujang Valley archaeological sites date from 100 AD and located around the Lembah Bujang Archaeological Museum in Kedah State to the north west of Sungai Petani.
The Bujang Valley archaeological sites are located around the Lembah Bujang Archaeological Museum in Kedah State to the north west of Sungai Petani. The museum is the focus point for the longtitude and latitude coordinates given for this very large and important site.
Lembah Bujang found itself on the maritime trading route between south Indian Tamil kingdoms and western Indonesia between the 4th and 13th centuries AD. The Indian Pallava Kingdom (4th to 9th centuries AD), and Chola Kingdom (9th to 13th centuries AD) not only traded with but culturally and religiously influenced Sumatra and Java and in doing so created a similar culture in the Bujang Valley.
Excavations have been ongoing since the 1990's across the whole complex. Finds have included some 50 "candi" or tomb temples, stone tablets with Sanscrit texts indicating Buddhist and animist belief systems, knives and beads, Buddhist statues, and trade items indicating connections between China and India. In a recent excavation in part of the wider area of Lembah Bujang known as Sungai Batu finds have included evidence of iron smelting and what is described as a "ritual site" dated to 110 AD.
Some of the more recent finds are held in the Lembah Bujang Archaeological Museum at the site, whilst others are in museums spread across the region.
