The slopes of Buttern Hill are covered in the remains of ancient settlement, with many reaves and hut circles to be found dotted all over the hillside, particularly the north eastern slopes which seem to be the centre of the settlement.

The remains of a very well preserved double walled hut circle, almost 10 metres in diameter with its floor level dug into the hillside to level it, can be found at SX 6555 8865.

Update August 2019: This enclosed settlement is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entry for the Buttern Hill Enclosed Settlement.

The Devon and Dartmoor HER also includes a record for this site - see MDV6140 (Enclosure in the Parish of Gidleigh) - along with the scheduling information on Historic England List ID 1021215 (Part of a coaxial field system, prehistoric settlements and cairns on Buttern Hill). There appears to be no Pastscape record for this settlement.
