[description by theCaptain and mikeaitch]
Right on the top of the headland is the remains of what is described on the OS maps as Tumulus. The mound is about 8 metres diameter, still more than one metre in height, and largely composed of white quartzy looking rock, of which there is plenty around here. The barrow has a clear kerb around it of large white stones, and perhaps bits of other structure can be made out amongst the remnants.
Easy to imagine why the ancients chose this magnificent place - views of the North Cornish Coast are spectacular. What a last resting place indeed.
There is no record of this promontary having ever been a clifffort, but it would seem to be an ideal location, with its narrow neck separating it from the main bulk of Trevose headland. Although there is no obvious sign of any defensive ramparts at the neck, it has to be said that the ground is worn flat to the bare rock here, with no soil or ground cover at all, no doubt its all been washed away during past storms where the waves will have probably washed right over the top of the headland taking all the soil etc with them.
