The Hünenbett (long barrow) is located in a wood named Krähenholz, west of Horneburg.
It's oriented Northwest-Southeast.
The tomb's chamber has been mostly destroyed. Just two supporting stones, one of them still in situ, have remained. According to Schroller's examination in 1930 they possibly indicate an Extended Dolmen, probably oriented approximately Northeast-Southwest.
However the barrow is rather well preserved.
It's about 70 m long and about 5,50 m wide.
Several kerbstones have remained at both long sides, espescially at the northeastern long side.
Here during the examination in 1930 still 17 kerbstones were visible, most of them in situ.
At that time at the southwestern long side 7 comparatively large stones were counted, 6 of them still in situ.
When I visited the site in 1994 it was difficult to get a clear view. But I guess most of these stones were still there.
However at both narrow sides no kerbstones have remained.
Close to the barrow the remains of a stone packing have been excavated.
The construction (e.g. the paving-stones and a single standing stone slab at a narrow side) indicates a neolithic earth grave, rather similar to the graves at the nearby Issendorf cemetery.
Due to this similarity also the stone packing-grave can be related to the Trichterbecherkultur (Funnel Beaker culture).
The Hünenbett is situated approximately 200 meters eastsoutheast of a group of about 20 latest neolithic or bronze aged round barrows.
Later the site's cemetery tradition was revivaled and continued until early Middle Ages.
So some small flat barrows including inhumation graves most probably date back to 8th or 9th century AD.
Close to these barrows a "Schulzenstab", a wooden staff that was the official symbol of an early medieval Schulze (very unsure translation: "village's judge"), has been found. Obviously this Schulze was buried at the site.
