Gullhaugen Cemetery
Gullhaugen Cemetery submitted by kenntha88 : Another one of the largest round mounds. It also has a very pretty shape and a clear ditch around the edges. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This site is called "Gullhaugen" after the sites largest burial mound, also called Gullhaugen, it means "The golden mound" in english. The site consists of over 30 mounds, 5 large round mounds, several elongated mounds, 2 large burial cairns located closer to the sea, several stone rings, and a large number of smaller round mounds.

The cemetery is located on a low ridge or hill on the narrowest northern part of the Tjøtta Island. It is a very nice view over the sea both to the east and west. The vegetation is low grass and some scattered leaf trees growing on and around the mounds. The vegetation have been grassed more or less away by sheep grazing in the field. The cemetery has been made easy to access, a path has been made that leads to the cemetery and several signposts have been places around the field.

The other part of the cemetery is closer to the sea, this part consist of two large burial cairns dated back to bronze age, and a number of smaller stone rings, also burial monuments.

The largest mound, "The golden mound" is about 25 metres across and 2-3 metres high. Three other mounds is about 18-20 metres across and from 1-2 metres tall. The rest of the round mounds is from 6 to 12 metres across and 0,5 to 1 metres high.
The elongated mounds are smaller than the round mounds and does not elevate much from the terrain. They are from 10 to 15 metres long and 2-3 metres wide. All the round mounds have very clear and deep ditches around the edges, and is very easy to spot in the low vegetation terrain.

All the mounds in this part of the cemetery has been dated back to the iron age. Several mounds have small craters on the top.
