Standing Stone (Menhir) in Co. Kerry
An early Christian site on the Dingle Peninsula, the ancient monastery of Kilmalkedar was founded in the 7th Century by St Maolcethair. A number of interesting objects are located outside of the church, including a tall ogham stone with the inscription "ANM MAILE-INBIR MACI BROCANN" (the name of Mael Inbir, son of Brocan) and perforated with a circular hole near the top.

There is a second inscription on another side.

For more information about the Kilmalkedar Monastic Site and its monuments, including more links for information about this Ogham Stone, see Kilmalkedar Early Christian Sculptured Stone(s) and The Journal of Antiquities' entry for Kilmalkedar Monastic Site, Dingle Peninsula, Co Kerry, Southern Ireland.

NOTE: This is an Ogham stone and not strictly a standing stone but this is our nearest site category.

Ireland's Ogham Stones being digitised by bat400 on Tuesday, 26 August 2014
(User Info | Send a Message)
Kilmalkedar Ogham Stone was scanned in 2013 as part of this project.

Artec 3D Scanners are scanning Ireland’s Ogham stones, which are tall and thin-ish stones that have inscriptions of the Irish Ogham alphabet on them. The Ogham alphabet is an early form of the Irish language, and these stones have the earliest discovered representation of it.

The Artec 3D Scanners website shows how they are going about scanning the stones, and have a video about the process.

Ogham in 3D news - 06/03/2014>

After a quiet winter Ogham in 3D is now entering phase III of digitising ogham stones in state care, thanks to further funding for this year from the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. We look forward to working with the National Monuments Service and the Discovery Programme in capturing at least another 17 ogham stones in 2014. Watch out for the team this Summer in North Kerry, Roscommon, Mayo, Kilkenny, Kildare, Waterford and Cork!
