Ringmoor Down Cairn 3
Ringmoor Down Cairn 3 submitted by mattimpey : Ringmoor Kerbed Cairn is just in view of the Ringmoor Stone Circle / Cairn Circle which is behind the gorse bushes in this picture. (Vote or comment on this photo)
High on Ringmoor are several very worn cairns and this kerbed stone cairn. It has probably been added to but it is a nice find on the featureless moorland.

One of the remaining Cairns high on Ringmoor. Cairn 3 can be found a few hundred metres to the west of the stone row, and does not look entirely convincing to me. It consists of a circle of fairly small stones, sitting on the moor surface, many of which look recent additions to me, although one or two are earthfast. There are no obvious cairn remains within this circle.

Update November 2019: This cairn is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entries for the Ringmoor Down Cairn Circle and the Ringmoor Stone Row & Cairn Circle.

The cairn is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 438674, as MDV4029 (Barrow 550 metres north-west of Brisworthy Stone Circle) on the Devon and Dartmoor HER, and scheduled as Historic England List Entry No. 1012248 (Stone setting (retaining kerb of a cairn) north-east of Brisworthy Plantation).

Ringmoor Down Cairn 3
Ringmoor Down Cairn 3 submitted by SandyG : Very few if any of the stones are earthfast and there is no visible trace of a mound. An absence of surface stone in the vicinity means that it is unlikely to be the work of recent visitors. Kerbs around some cairns seem to have been formed by placing stones on the original land surface and therefore the wobbly nature of these stones should not in itself detract from a prehistoric interpretation ... I see that The Captain visited this site a couple of weeks after me. He is more organised but I see we both had exactly the same thoughts about the site and in particular the non-earthfast character of most of the stones. I don't think this characteristic necessarily detracts from a prehistoric interpretation although if there had been surface stone in the vicinity this characteristic could be seen as a significant stumbling block. The site is scheduled although obviously this does not mean that it is prehistoric - just a consensus that it probably is. The only way to find out for sure would be to dig it but this is so true for a lot of our sites. How often does an excavation not throw new light on the site being investigated? So much more to discover. If there wasn't life would be a sadder place.

notes from my visit, 20 April 2013.
On the open moor of Ringmoor Down, to the north of Brisworthy, several varied cairns can be found. Cairn 3 can be found a few hundred metres to the west of the stone row, and does not look entirely convincing to me. It consists of a circle of fairly small stones, sitting on the moor surface, many of which look recent additions, although one or two are earthfast. There are no obvious cairn remains within this circle.

From Butler, Vol 4.
A less convincing structure lies just over 200 metres northwest of the stone row circle, a ring of stones about 3.5 m across surrounding a flat interior. It may mark the site of a demolished cairn, but only 2 or 3 stones are earthfast and the others have obviously been added in comparatively recent times to fake an antiquity.
