Due to the fact that it was discovered very late this is one of the very few sites in Germany where a passage grave chamber is nearly completely preserved in its original state (regarding stones and barrow) . Similar states of preservation are only found at Denghoog on Sylt and “Räuberhöhle” Idstedt.
The chamber is situated in a round barrow, diameter 29m, height approximately 3,5m. According to [1] the barrow was surrounded by a ring of small boulders and some larger erratic blocks.
Chamber orientation is 120° (~WNW-ESE), the lateral passage is situated in the middle of the southern long side and orientated SSW. Clear size of the chamber: length 6m, width 1,6m-2m, height 1,2m [2]. Original height appr. 1,4m.
Each long side is built of 4 orthostats, the short sides of 1 orthostat. The chamber is covered by five capstones. The 1,5m passage is made up of 2 pairs of orthostats and two capstones.
In 1882 the chamber was discovered and dug up by a teacher named Scheper. He found the chamber filled with sand. In 1898 another excavation by Dr. Bohls took place. The first appropriate excavation was done by Dr. Aust, Nast and Claussen in 1973.
Many fragments of funnel-beaker pottery, flintstone artifacts and ashes from cremation were found. But also some of the the findings were found to belong to the later single-grave culture. A lot of the funnel-beaker pottery obviously was removed from the chamber and huddled up outside the entrance. This lead to the conclusion, that the chamber was reused by the single-grave culture. Same observation could be made at other sites. Remains of the older burials were removed to reuse the tomb. Aust et al. also found the western chamber part separated by a wall of flat slabs. Similar findings were made for example by Prof. Ewald Schuldt during his outstanding research at several tombs in Mecklenburg.
