All of us at the Megalithic Portal are very sad to hear of the death of Holger Rix, who was a keen stones enthusiast, contributor and fellow site admin here for many years.

Holger was diagnosed with cancer in 2013 and had surgery for it. Michael (Krautrock) who also lives in the North of Germany kindly let us know. Michael went on many trips with Holger and they became close friends.

Holger is still our ninth biggest photo contributor, with 4558 images posted and our number one site page contributor, of over 6300 pages, many thousands of which have gone on to have photos added as well. These pages played a large part in expanding our coverage of Germany and Denmark especially, and we are forever indebted to him for his efforts behind the scenes. This is much more than just a numbers game of course, and Holger has over the years contributed some of our most memorable images.

To remember him I have created a page with some of Holger's best photos and also some from Krautrock showing Holger working his magic.

Please feel free to leave messages on this page or on comments on any of Holger's photos

Thanks everyone - I found an article from 2010 describing some of Holger's work behind the scenes - it's the second part of this article:

Our second 'Armchair Stone hunter' is Holger Rix. He is the brains and eyes behind adding around 2000 sites from Denmark to our database over the summer, based on publicly available data from the Danish Culture ministry.

Sad news. He will be missed by many on the portal and elsewhere. One of the greatest contributors to this site and a true stones lover. Some wonderful photos and intelligent discussion over the years. RIP Holger

I really looked forward to seeing Holger's photos being posted to the Portal and seeing places he'd visited. I admired the way he photographed the sites he'd been to, and often tried to emulate the way he'd framed his shots (but not really succeeded!).

I was saddened to hear of his death. My thoughts are with his friends and family. This is a really nice tribute to him. Thanks for organising it.

Although the information settled for 4 weeks now, i still cannot fully realise this sad fact. Holger, you did sound a bit more optimistic in your last mails we shared, so i hoped for your future recovery. Hope there is music and megaliths in the hereafter and we will meet one day. Cheers dear stone-friend.

I present my condolences to the members of Holger's family, and his friends among us.
I didn't know Holger personally, just by name : for his numerous contributions, in particular to our map of Portugal.
