Anne T writes: In the spring of 2014 the Portal received an email from Martti Lahti in Finland to let us know about some enigmatic Neolithic stone structures, found only in Ostrobothnia in Western Finland. These structures are called Giant's Churches or Jätinkirkko.

With a total of around 50 of these structures known, I now have a list of 38 of them confirmed as Giant's Churches, and a further 7 which are listed as 'possibles'. I have been slowly adding them onto the Megalithic Portal maps and site database.

A few of them, such as Kastelli, Hautakangas, Hangaskangas and Rajakangas Giant's Churches, are well known, but only in rare cases have we have been able to get photographs. Most of them we can find very little information about, apart from the sparse official records from the Cultural Environment Agency of Finland.

The documentation I have come across to date says "largely dated as Stone Age, all Giant's Church structures are recorded as having been built between 2,500 and 2,000 BC in a time when sea level was much higher, so they will have appeared as islands rising out of the water."

Whilst the reason for building these giant's churches remains enigmatic (one theory says they area either dwelling places, temples, fortresses or natural formations), it was thought most likely they were used for the hunting and storage of dead seals on the spring ice. However a comment left on the Portal's Kastelli Giant's Church site page in March 2015 states that "The hunting enclosure hypothesis is no longer considered valid by most scholars", although gives no further details.

For more information, read Ridderstad and Okkenen's paper: Orientations of the Giant's Churches in Ostrobothnia, Finland. (If you read this article, Jätinkirkko translates to 'I left the churches' which can be confusing.)

All 45 sites I have information on have now been added to the Portal. If you have any further information about these intriguing structures, please add a comment either to this article or to the individual site pages.

If you are planning to visit any of these Jätinkirkko, or have visited, we'd be delighted to hear from you!

[Update August 2017: Martti has sent through information on a couple more Giant's Churches which will be added shortly. Please note the links to the Cultural Environment Agency have been moved and no longer work, although the information remains correct, and new links will be added soon.]

Just wondering whether we should add a new type of monument for the Giant's Churches as at present they appear as Stone Fort or Dun. Specifically the "ORIENTATIONS OF THE GIANT’S CHURCHES IN OSTROBOTHNIA, FINLAND" paper supports an interpretation of the function of the structures related to an early solar or lunisolar calendar.
I was hoping to add them into the list of sites to render but don't want to render all Stone Forts or Duns. Maybe we should catergorise them as henges instead although that probably is not a good fit either.

    Hi, Juan,

Sorry, I don't (sadly). I entered these pages on behalf of Martti from Finland whilst sitting at my desk in Northumberland. My son in law tried to visit in May 2016 but the snow was too bad and he had to turn back.

We've since lost touch with Martti, but his last email included details of a book called "Megaliittikivien Arvoitus" by Jukka Nieminen (Mystery of Megalithic Stones in Finland) which is in Finnish, if this might help, together with a link Big-Pässilä (Iso-Pässilä) Giant Church (The Devil's Field), which he says is "the southernmost and in the same line as the Kastelli and other giant churches." [I've just tried sending Martti another email asking for any advice for you - if I hear from him, I'll post another reply here.]

As there are hardly any photographs of the Giant's Churches on the Portal - we'd really look forward to seeing any you wanted to post, together with your thoughts and impressions.

Wish I was coming with you! Have a great trip and looking forward to seeing your photos and comments.

        Hi, Juan,

I'm guessing you may not have problems with snow in September, as the May 2016 was pretty bad in Sweden/Norway/Finland and I think Ian was just unlucky. I'm hoping it will be different for you.

Have a great trip. If I hear from Martti, I'll let you know. Looking forward to seeing any photos and thoughts you have on these structures.

        Best wishes, Anne T.

          Hi, Juan,
I've had a reply from Martti with some recommendations, some links to websites and a little more information.
His reply is too long and too complex to post here. I'd send you a private message but you are recorded as 'anonymous' here, so I've got no contact details for you.
If you could either register with a user name and some details, I can contact you, or if you wish to send me a private message so I can reply - just click on my user details in the header to this comment.
Enjoy your trip - I am very envious!
          Best wishes.

Hi!
I am surprised by your statement: "between 2,500 and 2,000 BC in a time when sea level was much higher", because for instance in the Mediterranean sea the level was about the same as now, and earlier was much lower, not higher: https://mediterranee.revues.org/1912
In my opinion, it is easier to explain Giant's Churches' function if they have been on the land then in the sea.

It's probably due to post-glacial rebound. That part of Finland is still rising at about 1 metre per century.

    Hi, Giovanni,
I'm just quoting from the official documentation - this is what the experts say. There is very little written about these structures, so I'm interested to find out whatever I can about them.
Thanks very much for the input. All views and further evidence very welcome!
    Regards,
    Anne T.
