EventsCountry: Turkey The second international multi-disciplinary conference on the archaeology of sound will take place in Istanbul, Turkey on 30 October - 1st November 2015. Presentations from researchers, scholars and technologists working across diverse disciplines, sites and practices will focus on the ancient use of sound in sacred and contemplative spaces. With specialists collecting multi-disciplinary input on the spot, the working conference becomes inspirational bedrock for new thought. "We are particularly interested in the role acoustic behavior may have had in the development and design of important architecture and ritual spaces throughout the ancient world, and its possible biological impact on brain activity,” say organizers from The OTS Foundation. Presentations from fields such as archaeology, social anthropology, physics, neuroscience, architectural engineering, are expected to lead toward creating a new methodology for interpretation.
There will be a special focus on the ancient use of sound in sacred and contemplative spaces, and the timeless continuity of human behaviour that includes vocalization and acute aural sensitivity.
It is no secret that ancient cultures all over the world have exploited natural sound phenomena for sacred and ceremonial use. Those people who attended or have read the papers in the publication from the first OTSF Archaeoacoustics Conference have also discerned that Stone Age builders (at least on Malta) knew how to impart an impressive human psychological and physiological experience, whether they could explain the science of the method or not.
The question of “Why?” is ripe for exploring. We learned quite a bit last year. To date, the world’s oldest buildings have not been fully recognized as significant architectural achievement in the context of the thought process and lifestyle changes that produced them.
ARCHAEOACOUSTICS I in 2014 was a pioneering event that opened a door for study. Now we move forward armed with the beginnings of a methodology informed by diverse expertise. Our goal for ARCHAEOACOUSTICS II is to carry onward the insightful advantage of this multidisciplinary approach.
* To follow this back to some of the world’s oldest known shrines and sacred spaces to identify any patterns.
* To examine all aspects of ancient traditions of the use of sound and stone to evoke an altered state of consciousness.
* To see how all this directly relates to the design of contemplative architecture and potential applications for today.
The non-profit conference welcomes academics, independent researchers, musicologists and non-presenting enthusiasts. An optional post-conference excursion to visit the 12,000 year old monumental remains of Göbekli Tepe will be organized.
Proposals for paper and poster presentations are now being considered.
