The Devil stones has got some characteristics, which are not common with well known megalithic monuments from Neolithic period in west and north Europe.

It is rare in appearance, what is probably resulting from different concept of its structure. But on the other hand, like well known megalithic monuments from Neolithic Europe, the Devils Stones were built with large stone blocks and intentionally astronomically aligned. The latter is linked to another feature, which is also known in some famous megalithic monuments. Indeed, the phenomenon of light box, which is well known in at least two famous tombs, Newgrange and Maes Howe. Megalithic structure the Devil stones has at least two light boxes, positioned in the two pivotal lines, around which are arranged monoliths. With these two lines, we begin explanation of this seemingly unusual grouping of rocks.

First line, which we named polar axis, runs exactly in north-south direction. It is materialised in form of notches between largest monoliths. Second, East-West line or equatorial axis is represented with two narrow galleries in the lower and wider part of ground plan. Therefore, there is no doubt. Behind the configuration of monoliths is the concept of space, and not only that. There is also concept of time, which is materialized in both light boxes. Polar axis indicated a fixed point in the sky, around which stars rotate, and on the other end, the line in the sky, where celestial bodies culminate. Here sun reaches its highest point in the daily cycle around noon, the full moon about midnight etc… And when that happens about noon and if the sky is clear, you can see a sun light projection through light box on polar axis. This is therefore a daily phenomenon, because projection indicates the daily declination of the sun. Accordingly, the position and length of the light line, effect of projection, varied throughout the year. So, this light line is at the same time daily (noon) and seasonal marker.

Similar is situation with equatorial line. Such as polar axis, it marks space and time. Equatorial line represents two points in eastern and western horizon, where the sun rises and sets during equinoxes. On it and at the end of west gallery is second light box, oriented toward west horizon. During equinox, there is a similar projection in west gallery, as with the first light box. So, both of light boxes of Devil stones calibrated the brightness of celestial bodies and reveal prehistoric concept of time. With them, we can measure time…literally.

Shortly after the sun illuminates the monolith wall, tiny light line, perfectly alligned with the polar axis (NSA 1), appears. Then light line begins to tilt towards the east, and when it is shifted by 23,5 degrees, light phenomenon ends.

But only central ones has light box, namely in case of polar axis line NSA 1, and in case equatorial axis line EWE 2. We suppose, that third light box was located in East gallery, which is partly ruined. Because galleries weren’t placed in parallel, presupposed lig...

After that sun daily declination rise and finally achieve it maximum at summer solstice. In that moment of time, the line of sunlight is the shortest.
