Saturday, July 30th: 11:00am - 7:00pm Location: Dove Holes Community Hall and the Bull Ring Henge, Dove Holes, Derbyshire. Join us to celebrate the wonderful Bull Ring prehistoric henge and 10 years of the Megalithic Portal web resource. A free day of talks, displays and activities in Dove Holes Community Hall and the henge itself as part of the Festival of British Archaeology. No booking needed, just turn up and take part.

Many people know Arbor Low but we are celebrating its sister site, the other great henge monument in the Peak District. The Bull Ring is a huge 90m diameter circular earthwork, thought once to have contained a great stone circle as well. There will be talks and displays in the community hall from 1pm to 5.30pm approx, with hot and cold food available in the hall from 11.30am.

Tours and other activities at the henge which is right next door. There are a great number of fascinating stone circles and other megalithic monuments in the area so we will be looking at the wider context of the henge as well.

Lunchtime talks

1.00pm Martha Lawrence from Buxton Museum will give a talk on the Bullring henge and some of it's closest relations. She is also bringing a selection of artifacts found at the henge.

1.45 Kirsty Whittall will outline her research on the henge and the recent survey work

Afternoon talks

2.30pm Tim Prevett (ShropshireTraveller), author and tour guide on Ancient Routes of North Wales

3.10 Kevin Kilburn (Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society): The Bridestones Legacy - solstice alignments at Peak District monuments

4.00 Simon Charlesworth (Sem) Sacred stones & Secret signs standing stones in Wales and their possible use

4.40pm Andy Burnham: Little-known stones around the world - 10 years of the Megalithic Portal

Talk times are approximate, please check here for updates

Displays

Fascinating displays of prehistoric finds from the henge and a fantastic collection of neolithic stone axes, blades and scrapers from around the world.

Photo gallery and 'slide' display to showcase the best photography of ancient sites - bring your own blown up photo prints to display with prizes for the best images.

Megalithic Book stall featuring souvenir postcards of the day and items from our online shop.

Tours

Tours of the Bull Ring Henge on the hour to appreciate this wonderful ancient site

Martha Lawrence from Buxton Museum will be available to answer questions and members of the Megalithic Portal Society will be on hand to advise on how find information on ancient sites near you.

Food and Picnic

We will have hot and cold food available in the hall for lunchtime, see box below for more details. You are free to visit the henge all day and after the events in the hall we will have a picnic in the henge with acoustic music until approx 7pm, please bring your own instruments and food for the evening.

Location: Dove Holes Community Hall, Hallsteads, Dove Holes, Buxton, Derbyshire, SK17 8BJ

Directions: On the A6, five miles north of Buxton, turn right at the sign for Dove Holes Community Association, the hall is at the end of the road behind the cricket pitch. There is some parking available and it is a short walk from Dove Holes railway station.

Telephone / Text Contact: Andy Burnham - 07910 900298

Many thanks to Buxton Museum for their assistance in the loan of equipment and artifacts for this event and to Guy Stephenson for sharing the organisation. We hope to see you there if you can make it.

More photos and information on the Bull Ring are on our page here.

Note: Last plug for this before next Saturday. We will have hot and cold food in the hall from 11.30 until it sells out - see latest comment on the page for details.

An enjoyable afternoon. thanks for arranging it all.
I hope the university of sheffield information will be made available.
Tim Previtt's talk hit the right balance of information and entertainment.
The lady that had done the photographic research into solar positions
had some fascinating and informative ideas. I would like to see that work
developed further and presented using more computer technology.

I had not visited this Site before and found the surrounding hills and
landscape fascinating. the ambience at the henge was limited by ongoing
football and cricket matches but people usiung the embankment to weatch
the football was an interesting sight

Hi folks - belated thanks for such an enjoyable day; loved that so many showed an interest for the henge. If we visit Dove Holes again, I suggest we leaflet every house in the town in advance? It's locals who are best placed for being custodians of their wonderful monument.

We've been down to South Shropshire straight from the event with broadband slower than dial up and intermittent mobile signal, so not had chance to get to pictures in place. Will follow during Wednesday sometime!

Cheers

well well guys, that was just awesome!! what a top day

...met some great folk and was nice to put faces to names...i really enjoyed the talk on the geophysics study of the 'burial mound'; it took me back to my time at uni doin just such a thing..having said that all the talks were great. speaking to guy late in the evening we discussed doing it again next year. the bull ring is a fabulous venue, centrally located in the UK (thank god it wasn't held around Avebury or somewhere else so very obvious) with a community hall next door with facilities for events...somebody posted above that it would be great to have a different venue each year but i honestly cant think of another circle/henge that offers a venue next door. guys, i'd love to present a talk next year if you do decide to do this again...how about this; ''the great neolithic circles of the lake district, a study in architecturally comparison ''?

warmest regards, dean

(incidentally i was the chap with short grey hair, ring through my nose playing guitar on the far henge bank and talking to all and sundry xx I had a great time playing with all the musos sat over there, thank you one and all)

A great day and I was so pleased to meet Andy and some of the other regular contibutors to the Portal.

For next time at the Bull Ring, need to make sure that the curtains will allow projected images in better contrast and re the sound system, much needed improvements are necessary. Andy's closing talk was barely audible above the shrieks and whistles from the audio system and we could hardly see the pix due to setting sun streaming in through the window blinds.

Otherwise a really well organised event that should be repeated, perhaps every couple of years, in between similar eleswhere in the UK.

A properly great day folks. Thanks for attending. Really good response for a very deserved site. It hasn't had so much love for millenia. To look round and see 150 people that had come to respect this sacred space brought me to tears. To have all the finds back at the henge was a special moment for me. I'll never forget the entire day.
The kitchen made almost £150 profit so we have donated £75 to the Portal and £75 to the 'Mustard Tree' charity in Manchester for their soup run - there are people eating tonight because of you. So much thanks to Miz and Roz for all their time and effort in cooking, cleaning, serving and generally smiling all day. They were up til 2am on Saturday baking those lovely cakes!!
Everyone that attended learnt something. Most of us left with more theories to consider than ever before. Particular thanks to Andy of course (tireless work all day and 10 years of running our beloved Portal), Martha Lawrence from Buxton museum (great talk and so helpful) and all of our speakers. Finally a big thanks to June for her impromptu talk - it got many people thinking about the position of the henge and led to much discussion afterwards.
I can't see how it could have been much better - the perfect amount of people, the perfect mix of people, some great talks and displays, good food and a henge.
A great birthday for the Portal.
Many many thanks
Blingo_von_T

PS. No damage whatsoever was done to the henge. I asked some of the football club to move their cars but was met with a response that made me decide to leave it as no damage at all was done. If any damage had happened I would have immediately involved the police.

This picture will clarify the parking situation.

Hmmm :-(

I'd guess the people parking could have been totally unaware that the rough ground they were directed to was part of the Henge? Just because we can all see what it is straight away, the average mortorist wouldn't.

Did you note any damage? I'd think that if they have had as little rain as I have in Yorkshire, that the ground would have been mercifully rock hard so wouldn't have reduced to a slushy mess. Not condoning it at all, just saying it could have been a lot worse.

Thanks Beorwulf, glad you enjoyed it. I too had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon listening to some very interesting talks, and meeting loads of you other megaraks in person, till now only computer nicknames to me. But I can now put faces to many of the names behind our wonderful contributors (but I didn't spot Cerrig). Unfortunately, still too many of you remain "anonymouse" to me because of my short time there, and as I had to leave just as beer and a natter was calling!

I think perhaps we need to wear hats with our pseudonym's written on them in big letters!

For me it was a long old day. Despite Google and The AA's best estimates of less than 3 hours, up to the Bullring Henge took at least 4 hours drive up, but the afternoon talks and displays once there were good. thankfully it was only 2.5 hours back.

Hope somebody was taking pictures!

Final post before big event !!

120+ neolithic stone artifacts (inc dozens of flint axes and battleaxes!) all packed up and ready to transport. Food is looking really good - arrive hungry !!

Still no idea of how busy we will be but I am quietly confident that it will be well attended. We'll have fun whatever happens.

If your still deciding whether or not to come and join us then just do it - events like this are very rare and there will be so many knowledgeable people in 1 room that it is really a megalithic convention! If you have the slightest interest in stones then this is the place to be. If successful then may become an annual event !!

Can't wait to meet some of you.

I have at great expense obtained some string and old fashioned bulldog clips so the idea is we will and string these up and you help make the gallery by bringing and clipping up your own photos and prints.

If you want to pick them up at the end of the day (~6pm) then please make sure they are labelled with your name, and we cannot accept responsibility for loss or damage to art, photos etc etc.

Bring some blutak for large items as well but we need to look after the paintwork of the hall!

Looking forward to seeing the most amazing gallery. We should have room for plenty.

We will also work out some judging and prizes for the best ones, details TBD

If you have any stone artifacts you wish to have evaluated by experts then feel free to bring them along. There will be several attendees that can take a look and give an opinion. I will be bringing some serious lithics reference books with me for anyone to peruse. I will also be bringing the usual Burl, Cope etc and all the archaeological dig reports (1949, 1984) so get your reading head on and start thinking about what questions you want to ask - there will be no better collection of people to talk to than on Saturday.

Home made soup(s) - probably a tomato but maybe others . . .
Home made cakes - cake experts - vegan and wheat free options
Teas
Herbal teas
Coffee
Cans of pop (hopefully cold).
Sandwiches - awaiting final details but certainly homemade and fresh

There will be vegetarian, vegan and wheat-free options for certain, reasonably priced and good quality.

Food profits will be split between funding the hire of the hall and a homeless charity in Manchester.

I was so delighted to see the Bull Ring celebration. I moved to Hayfield in 1969 and went to most sites and did my A-Level dissertation on Ritual Landscapes in the Bronze Age including the Dove Holes henge and Hob Hurst House. Dove Holes was always such a sad place - so different to Arbor Low which always had an air of mystery. When I started enquiries no-one wanted to know. Moved to Kintyre, Scotland, in 2006 and am immersed in archaeolgy there and have just finished giving a course to the local U3A.
