<< Books/Products >> Win the new Magic Stones photo book in our latest competition

Submitted by Andy B on Thursday, 11 October 2007  Page Views: 10377

FunMerrell Publishing has just brought out the fantastic new book 'Magic Stones' by Czech photographer Jan Pohribný. Jan has travelled as far afield as Sweden, Sardinia, Poland and of course Orkney to photograph some extraordinary and unusual megalithic sites. Containing 250 beautiful full colour images from half page up to double page 11x19 inch spreads, the publishers claim this is the most wide-ranging photographic study of ancient European stone structures ever to be published.

I don't think I can argue with that, as far as books go anyway. Pohribný’s photographs reveal caves filled with prehistoric paintings and carvings, windswept burial grounds and places of worship from all over Europe. The book is also due out in Czech and French versions at the end of October 2007.

Magic Stones has a long and insightful introduction by Julian Richards, who is better known to the children of Woking as 'that man who does funny things with bits of wood', and who are we to deprive a man of his hobby. Anyway, I digress, if you are someone who likes to give or receive a sumptuous photo book on megaliths for Christmas, then this is my recommendation for this year. See more about the book at Amazon.co.uk.

We have managed to get hold of two copies of Magic Stones to give away to Megalithic Portal readers. To further 'big up' the excitement level I have thrown in some other stuff on the theme of 'Megaliths in Europe' as runner up prizes, so here goes with the competition:

In the Further Reading section of Magic Stones, Jan and Julian write: The Megalithic Portal and Megalith Map web site has information on many of the sites featured in this book.

Here is a rundown of the number of number of ancient site listings we have on the Megalithic Portal, by country.*

1. England 4585 sites
2. France 4066 sites
3. Scotland 2438 sites
4. ??????? 1797 sites
5. Wales 1344 sites

Question: Which country is ??????? in 4th place

I'll give you a clue, it's not Ireland (either of them).

Prizes:

2 copies of Magic Stones, this year's glossy megalithic photo book worth £29.99
2 copies of our own Stone Circles CD-ROM by Tom Bullock, worth £9.99 (new low price)
2 copies of The Megalithic European by Julian Cope, worth - erm - £4.99 if you can find one in 'The Works' or Bookends
