Jonathan Wallis, the principal curator of collections at the museum in Derby's Strand, stepped back in time yesterday as he examined a Stone Age axe head found in a garden in Mickleover ahead of it going on display at Derby Museum and Art Gallery.

The 77mm quartzite hand axe is estimated to be between 40,000 and 60,000 years old. Historians believe it would have been used for cutting meat and scraping hides clean so they could be used for clothes.

Mr Wallis said: "It's really special because it's the earliest evidence of man being in the city."

The artifact will be on display in the Origins of Derby gallery at the museum, from today.
