Archaeological assessment work along the route of a proposed by-pass in Cheshire has revealed valuable information on the presence of Neolithic man in the county.

In total one hundred and fifty trenches along the planned route of the A34 Alderley Edge by-pass are to be dug. To date 79 have been completed (work has been halted by the bad weather) but finds have included flints - some measuring up to 3 cm in length.

Contractors undertaking the work on behalf of Cheshire County Council said “this scattering of flints indicates some activity around 4,000BC” they added that the “flints would have been used as tools, like blades, arrowheads and cutting implements”.

The finds did not come as a surprise as the excavators were looking at that particular location for a reason but a flood of historians is not anticipated.

Cheshire has very few Neolithic monuments - The Bridestones , near Congleton being the most notable - and apart from a few artefacts, the Alderley flint scatter add significantly to the current understanding of Neolithic man in Cheshire. However they are unlikely to affect the planning application and the course of the by-pass.
