Anne T visited on 16th May 2019 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 3 Access: 3 Shovel Down Row 3: To the west of stone row 2, and to the north of row 4, there was not much left to see of this row, which I tried to trace (without much success due to the high, tussocky grass on this part of the moor) as we walked down towards the stone circle.
Now writing up my photojournal, I’m pleased to see that Sandy G’s photographs, whilst showing a lot more stones, are a little similar to mine, largely showing the tops of stones peeking out of the grass. Good job for our superb guide, who pointed out the row to me.

Shovel Down double stone row 3 is again a typical Dartmoor avenue, and can be seen just to the west of the fourfold circle and double row 2, running off to the north, in a bit more of a westerly direction than row 2. The remains of this avenue are about 160 metres long, but there is not a clearly defined end at either north or south. It seems probable that the southern end was at a cairn positioned very close to the cairn at the top of row 2 (the fourfold circle) but that this, along with much of the double row at this end, has been destroyed first by a Bronze Age Reave which has been built right through the site at this point, and then by later wall building, which has unfortunately destroyed much of the Shovel Down complex. The row becomes much more complete towards the north, as it wanders off across the hillside. The north and south ends cannot be seen from each other, and the row is clearly not straight, gradually curving to the west as it proceeds over the upper part of the ground it is built on, approximately in the centre.

The SRoGB entry includes a very helpful plan of the monuments on Shoveldown, showing the relationship between them, as does PDW's page for the Shovel Down Complex.
