Ringmoor Down Stone Row
Ringmoor Down Stone Row submitted by mattimpey : The Stone Row / Avenue on Ringmoor terminates at the Stone Circle / Cairn Circle. (Vote or comment on this photo)
On the top of the open moor that is Ringmoor Down, to the north of Brisworthy and its stone circle, this tremendous cairn circle and 369m long stone row are to be found, although they were "restored" in 1909, supposedly not very accurately, and as a result little is known as to its original length or format.

The stone row heads off to the north from the cairn circle, at places seemingly a single row, at other places a double row, although this is probably attributed to its restoration as none of the stones at the uphill (cairn) end were still standing prior to that, all having been knocked over or moved by medieval ploughing, remnants of which can clearly be seen.

The only original stones of the row are at the northern end, and these stones are much smaller or more buried under the turf than the upper parts of the row. However, they remain nicely aligned and spaced at about 1.7m from each other.

At the northern end of the row is a nice 1.2 m tall pillar, re-erected where it was found, possibly in its original position, nowadays in the centre of a large marshy puddle.

Update November 2019: This alignment is featured on the Stone Rows of Great Britain website - see their entry for Ringmoor Down, which includes a description, a simplified plan of the row with the terminal cairn at its southern end, a plan showing the location of the row in relation to the later medieval field boundaries, photographs of the alignment, access information and a list of online resources for more information. The SRoGB also includes an additional entry to discuss and illustrate the Sea Views at Ringmoor Down.

The row is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 438671 (stone row and cairn circle) and as MV3986 (Stone Row on Ringmoor Down) on the Devon and Dartmoor HER. The row is also scheduled as Historic England List Entry No. 1012246 (Stone alignment and terminal cairn with a retaining kerb on Ringmoor Down).

The row is also included on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their pages for the Ringmoor Down Stone Row and the Ringmoor Stone Row & Cairn Circle.

Ringmoor Down Stone Row
Ringmoor Down Stone Row submitted by caradoc68 : SX 564 661, Ringmoor ringed cairn and stone row. Restored in 1907 and severely criticized by Richard Hansford Worth. the stone circle is said to have five standing stone originally, so what we see today is a complete misrepresentation. The circle itself is 12.6 meter's in diameter. and is a nice site to visit (Vote or comment on this photo)

A nearby WW2 war memorial just so happens to be identical? Could the stone have been moved and used for this very purpose? (10 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)
