SandyG visited on 4th Mar 2016 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Car parking is available at SS 84543 44569. From here walk northward along the roadside verge for about 50m then veer to the right and walk up the hill for about 50m. The row is not at all obvious and may take you a while to find.

Remains of a double Stone Row on Porlock Common, on Exmoor.

I found 5 tiny little stones in two parallel rows, just uphill from the stream on the eastern side of the road. There was one row of three stones, spaced about 1.5 metres apart. Adjacent to this is a second row consisting of one stone at the western end, and one more beyond the eastern end, which would seem to be from a fourth pair. The two rows are less than a metre apart. The largest stone is no more than 6 inches in height !

These stones are almost totally lost in the heather, but they are firmly positioned, and definitely not just stones sitting on the surface. The rows point directly at the stone circle over the road, and I am lead to believe that there are one or two more stones to be found under the thick moorland covering of heather.

To find this row, drive south along the Exford road from Whitstone Post junction, and after a couple of kilometres there is a place to park by the little bridge just south of the gated entrance to the sheepfold by the stone circle.

Update November 2019: More information about this stone alignment can be found on the Stone Rows of Great Britain's website - see their entry for Porlock Common, South West, which includes a description, a plan of the row from a field visits in March 2016 and April 2018, photographs of the alignment and its individual stones, access information and a list of online resources for more information.

The row is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 859261 and as MSO7924 (Prehistoric double stone row on Porlock Allotment).

Porlock Common SW Stone Row, Exmoor, Somerset.
Visited Sunday, 24th September 2006.
SS8458 4465, Alt 410m, Access 5, Ambience 3, Condition 2

Drive south along the Exford road from Whitstone Post junction, and after a couple of kilometres there is a place to park by the little bridge just south of the gated entrance to the sheepfold by the stone circle.

This is my first Exmoor stone row.
