TheCaptain visited on 3rd May 2022 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 4 Access: 2 Getting down from White Ridge to the river and Beehive Hut is a bit tricky finding the way through the gorse here where it is very rough and largely overgrown, but once down it was easy to find. A splendid little construction and seeing it makes me think I have been here before, possibly on one of those mega expeditions in the 1980's, or perhaps I am confusing it with some of the similar orries in the Ariege Pyrénées. I see my only other person out here on the moors today, well camouflaged and fishing in the Dart, no doubt illegally as he looks very sheepish and hesitant to say hello.

Lade Hill Brook Beehive Hut
Lade Hill Brook Beehive Hut submitted by AngieLake : Lade Hill Brook Beehive Hut is situated on the east bank of the East Dart river. This photo was taken in the mid-1980s. See site page for info. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This beehive hut is situated beside Lade Hill Brook, which runs into the East Dart river just near a very sharp hairpin bend in its flow south. It is mentioned in Butlers 'Dartmoor Atlas of Antiquities, Vol.2 - The North'. He shows a photograph of it next to map 34 in this series.

Best access would probably be from the Dartmoor National Park car park and information centre at Postbridge. There is a long footpath (walking boots necessary) but lovely scenery. The beehive hut is on the east bank of the river as it makes this sharp bend. Further up stream, where the river runs from the west to east there is a waterfall. To the northwest of this is Sandy Hole Pass and Broad Marsh. At this time of the year after the rain we've had, I should imagine it is pretty boggy up there!

Butler writes
"Neither of the main branches of the Dart was a prolific source of tin. The only large streamworks along the East Dart involves both banks of the river at Broad Marsh, so much so that the exit through Sandy Hole Pass had to be walled and deepened. The lower reaches of Lade Hill Brook have been streamed for a short distance above the junction where a bottle-shaped beehive hut has been built amidst the tinners' mounds, well preserved with a narrow entrance leading into a corbelled circular chamber (c. 3.0 x 2.0 m)"

Thanks for that Hamish... and for prompting his research Martyn.
Didn't I read somewhere that the Phoenicians traded tin with various sites in the south west of England? What sort of time-scale would that be in?

I was basing my statement on the words "built amidst the tinners' mounds" which themselves I would assume to be 17th or 18th century.

Made a mistake in the text:
It's a Dartmoor National Parks visitor centre and car park at Postbridge, not National Trust.
Also, I had forgotten to look for the Grey Wethers footpath. I knew the circles were directly north, and I see on the OS map that the beehive hut stands very close to this track from Postbridge to their site.
