Stone Fort or Dun in Co. Clare

Cahermacnaughten is a stone fort most likely built during the medieval period as a fortified farmstead. Huge stones were used in constuction, and the walls are almost 10 feet high. It is almost round in shape, with a diameter of about 100 feet. Inside the enclosure, the accumulation of centuries of domestic materials has raised the ground level inside the fort covering the foundations of buildings whose outlines can still be detected. Occupied as late as the end of the 17th Century CE, it is most famous as the location of the celebrated Gaelic law school of the O'Davoren family.
