SandyG visited on 6th Jul 2013 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 4 Access: 2 Car parking is available at SX 52178 77879. From the car park follow the track leading eastward. This one is a bit of slog, pretty much all uphill for over 3kms. The row is situated just inside the Merrivale military live firing range and it is important that you check that there is no firing and that the range is open for visitors. It’s a long way to go to find you can’t visit.

Langstone Moor stone row
Langstone Moor stone row submitted by TheCaptain : Running off to the north from the Langstone is the remains of a stone row, which can be followed for about 100 metres before it runs out. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Running off to the north from the Langstone is the remains of a stone row, which can be followed for about 100 metres before it runs out, but there is nothing to suggest that this was the original end.

About 20 or more stones can be found, spaced at about 2 to 3 metres from each other, but there are many gaps, and the stones are small and not well shaped, with many fairly hard to find amongst the grass.

Don’t be confused by a much more recent boundary stone about a hundred metres to the east being anything to do with the row. I have seen elsewhere that this has been stated to be the end of the row, and that the stones in the row are too small to be found !

This row is fairly straightforwards to reach, although it involves a walk of about 3 km each way. The obvious way is to walk east from parking at Godsworthy along the Lich Way, past White Tor.

Update November 2019: This row is featured on the Stone Rows of Great Britain website - see their entry for Langstone Moor, which includes a description, a plan of the row, photographs of the alignment with its Langstone terminal stone, access information and a list of online resources for more information.

The SRoGB adds: "The Langstone denotes the southern end of the row. It is significantly larger than any of the other stones and was used as a target for small arms fire during the Second World War. The hollows in its surface are the consequence of this activity are not cup marks".

The row is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 439621 and as MDV6003 (Stone row south of Laughter Tor) on the Devon and Dartmoor HER. The site is also scheduled as Historic England List Entry No. 1007897 (Stone alignment and round cairn on Langstone Moor).

Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) also includes this row - see their entries for the Langstone Moor Stone Row and the Langstone Moor Stone Circle, Stone Row & Settlements.

Note: Please note, the row and circle are in the Merrivale live firing range, you will need to check the range open times beforehand. Also beware before walking off from here to the langstone moor stone circle on a direct route. The nasty Langstone Mire lies in between.
