Anne T visited on 18th Aug 2018 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Creagantairbh Beag Standing Stone: I hadn’t spotted these on the OS map as we were driving along, but saw the still standing stone through the fence line. Quickly stopping by the side of the road to take a photograph, I noticed there was also a fallen stone. We decided to stop and investigate further on the way back down the road from Ford village. On way back from Ford, we turnedthe car onto a track signposted to ‘Kilmichael Glen 7’ we were immediately into the same field as the standing stones(s), only on the right side of the fence. Getting closer we realised that the cracks on both sides of the stone matched almost precisely, so the fallen part must have been the top of the stump. This would have been amazingly tall! In the field of the house opposite were some brown and black alpacas, and I took a photo to remind me.

custer visited on 15th Sep 2012 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 3 Access: 5 Right beside road, single track road quite busy, gate to Alpaca field enough to pull of the road, ambience would be better if climbed over fence and wall into field.

Standing Stone in Argyll

Creagantairbh Beag NM859015 Map 55. Found off the B840 Loch Awe road about 2 miles from the junction with the A816.On the map it is called Creganterve Beg.

This stump of this stone, with the broken shaft lying prostrate beside it, is recored as Canmore ID 22787 which tells us this stone lies adjacent to the road and must originally have measured 16ft 2 ins high. Canmore tell us that the shaft of the stone was blown down in the Tay Bridge gale of 1879!

Creagantairbh Beag
Creagantairbh Beag submitted by crannog : From a different angle to help show how this 'menhir' is snuggled to the hills on one side but the other opens out onto wide glen. (just opposite the house in the background is the remains of a wrecked cairn and there is another almost half way towards the stone.. hope that makes sense!). (Vote or comment on this photo)

Creagantairbh Beag
Creagantairbh Beag submitted by crannog : At one time this looks as though it has been a mighty huge menhir but over time has cracked, broken and fell over! (Vote or comment on this photo)

Creagantairbh Beag
Creagantairbh Beag submitted by Anne T : Standing to the south of the standing stones, looking up towards where the track to Kilmichael Glen runs. There are several cairns on the hillside to the right hand side of the farmhouse in the distance.

Creagantairbh Beag
Creagantairbh Beag submitted by Anne T : Looking almost directly north west from the stones, across the B840, to the hills beyond.

Creagantairbh Beag
Creagantairbh Beag submitted by Anne T : Looking at the fallen top part of this tall standing stone. It must have been magnificent when it was all one stone. Did this mark the split in route between the road to Ford and Torran and Kilmichael Glen?

Creagantairbh Beag
Creagantairbh Beag submitted by Anne T : Looking at the still standing stump, which leans a little, the crack across its top and side almost exactly matches that on the fallen fragment. It was then we realised they were part of one large standing stone that had cracked.

Creagantairbh Beag
Creagantairbh Beag submitted by Anne T : On our way back from Torran and Ford, we found a spot to park (just off the track to Kilmichael Glen) where we were the 'right side' of the fence to walk to the stones. With a beautiful valley and a llama farm opposite, very warm and buzzing bees, this was a lovely location, even though the stones were right next to the quiet B840.

Creagantairbh Beag
Creagantairbh Beag submitted by Anne T : As we drove by, I spotted the stump of this stone near the fence. Quickly reversing, I hopped out of the car to take a closer look and realised there was another stone lying on the ground.

Creagantairbh Beag Cairns
Creagantairbh Beag Cairns submitted by Anne T : This is the larger cairn, near the large tree in the field, before you reach the standing stone. It does look as if it has a kerb or a slight ditch around it, judging by the difference in vegetation around it.

Creagantairbh Beag Cairns
Creagantairbh Beag Cairns submitted by Anne T : These are the two smaller cairns, nearer to the gate. The ground is very disturbed. We didn't find the cist cover in the northernmost of these two cairns, as they were largely covered by turf.

Creagantairbh Beag
Creagantairbh Beag submitted by Iain_P : Such a shame it hasn't been reconnected to the stump

Creagantairbh Beag
Creagantairbh Beag submitted by Iain_P : The broken stone is huge!

Creagantairbh Beag
Creagantairbh Beag submitted by Iain_P : HES gives this information: This broken standing stone is situated immediately E of the public road (B840) in an improved pasture field about 140m E of the Creagantairbh Beag farmstead. Aligned E-W, the stump measures 1.4m by 0.5m at the base and rises to a height of 1.8m. From the size of the broken portion, which was blown down in 1879, and now lies immediately to the E, it would appear tha...
