Linby Cross and Well
Linby Cross and Well submitted by HOLYWELL : Site in Nottinghamshire England The ancient Linby cross near Nottingham. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Cross in Nottinghamshire

This old cross is unusually situated as it covers an ancient spring head seen by some as a holy well. Indeed the village unusually has two crosses, an upper and a lower one. These are thought to be boundary crosses to indicate the extent of the Sherwood Forest.
The one in question is further west and is the oldest, the spring arises here and flows under the other. This upper cross was destroyed in the 1560s but restored in the 1860s It has seven steps. The lower cross, has square steps, it dates from 1660,and was set up to replace the old upper cross before its restoration.
