Turf Maze, Rochester (Kent) submitted by HOLYWELL

Turf Maze in Kent. An interesting possible lost turf maze. I was sceptical of the existance especially as the area it is supposed to have been in is called the Vines.

This of course is suggestive of earthworks made from a vinery. However, when visiting it there appears to be circular banks and hollows remiscent of a broken down turf maze. There is very little recorded in Kent archives other than oral tradition. Can you see the hollows and banks?

There is a nearby area in Rochester called Troy Town which I understand suggests the site of a maze.

Part of the Roman city wall can be viewed from Eagle Court which is down a alley way besides the Eagle Tavern in Rochester High Street.

Not far from the Vines is pub called the Coopers Arms which is supposed to be haunted by a monk.
He was apparently bricked up in the cellar of the pub for his affair with a nun.
They used to meet in a secret tunnel that went from the Coopers arms, under the Vines to the Catherdral.
The pub is one of the oldest in Kent and people have been reporting strange occurances for a number of years.

Nice picture of the pub here:
