Meckelstedt Steingrab
Meckelstedt Steingrab submitted by Harald_Platta : The Meckelstedt Steingrab (Sprockhoff 616) are the remains of a chambered tomb in Meckelstedt (Lower Saxony, Germany). It was built between 2500 and 2800 BC. The uploaded picture is a shot of an enlarged historic photo displayed in the Historisches Museum Bremerhaven. The original photo was taken around 1900. The impressive remains of a chambered tomb, consisting of two uprights on the south side and one on the north side. These carry one large capstone (3m x 2m x 1,5m). According to reports from the 19th century the chamber originally had at least 8 uprights and 2 capstones. It was built between 2500 and 2800 BC.

(Reference: Sprockhoff et. al. - Atlas der Megalithgräber Deutschlands – Teil 3 Niedersachsen, Westfalen, p. 6)

Like at some other sites in northern europe there are several cup-marks on the capstone. So there is some evidence, that the tomb was reused during bronze-age. The cupmarks are concentrated in the southeastern part of the capstone.

Meckelstedt is a small village, consisting of a few cottages along a minor road. The chambered tomb is near the east-end of the village, only 10 m north of the road situated in a small, thin grove.

The top photo is a shot of an enlarged historic photo displayed in the Historisches Museum Bremerhaven. The original photo was taken around 1900.

Meckelstedt Steingrab submitted by SolarMegalith : My favorite of all the dolmens, the magnificent Huenengrab in Meckelstedt. Only one capstone and 3 carrying stones are left, but it's location and ambience are wonderfull.
