Kerlescan North Cromlech
Kerlescan North Cromlech submitted by LizH : This shows some of the stones on what would be the western side of the cromlech, embedded in a more modern wall. The trees and gorse are also visible. This was taken in one of the most open stretches of the wooded area, so not indicating how difficult it in fact was to see or move! (Vote or comment on this photo)
This site is mentioned by Burl as being a cromlech to the north of the western cromlech at Kerlescan. It is in a thick wood, and it was impossible to see any distance through it.

Paths through the wood were difficult to see and it was not easy to be sure what we had found. However, eventually we came across stones now mounted in a more modern wall. These were about 90 metres north east of the Kerlescan menhir, as Burl says the stones are (we were able to confirm this as we struggled out).

The stones of the cromlech are quite big, but it is not possible to see far or to follow the lines of the stones, or indeed even the wall. However, it does appear to curve slightly in the northern direction. Burl says that 36 stones still stand - and this may be the case. The site was thick in trees and gorse and difficult underfoot.

The stones themselves were not very dramatic and I ask myself whether it was worth it and I'm not sure it was! We spent a long time looking, some of it uncertain what we were looking at, and found not very much. No-one else was there though (not surprising really). I wouldn't recommend it.

My apologies; I have misled the map in relating the position of this cromlech to the wrong menhir. Kerlescan cromlech north is about 110 metres north easterly of the Kerlescan cromlech west, (with the menhir at the end of the tumulus about 90 metres south west of the North cromlech). Editors, if you can, please reposition! (It was bad enough to find in the first place, I really wouldn't want anyone mad enough to try it to be looking in the wrong place as well!)

Liz. Last night I didn't check the position you had given for this cromlech, and the page had already been accepted to the portal. Having checked it now (using geoportail - the second from right blue aeroplane logo) it does indeed seem to have landed in the wrong place.

Unfortunately it is not marked on the ign maps, which is a large part of why it was a blank in the portals database to start with. One day all these things will be sorted out, but there is only so much time in the world for us admins........ Which is where people like you can help us out, which is what you are doing. Thanks.

With this site not marked on the maps, I can only guess as to its position, which would be roughly as you describe. Perhaps you could give us a better position based on your stonehunting experiences in the woods - again, use the Geoportail button to open up a detailed map of the right area - perhaps open it from the Kerlescan cromlech site page. Open up the map (carte) option as well as the aerial view option using the boxes on the left of the screen. Then you can position the cursor using the mouse at the right place, and just below the map it gives a readout of the position in Latitude and Longitude. These need to be translated to decimal format for the portal, but we could do this if you quote the degrees, minutes, seconds format it provides.

    Thanks for these additions. Martyn.

Martyn Happy to attempt this! I didn't know how to use these buttons to give a good position, now I do I can do this better. It is hard because of the woods but it's somewhere in there at long 03 03' 04" lat 47 36' 20" (perhaps it's a touch further north). I can't quite make out the menhir on this map but think it's at long 03 03' 04" lat 47 36' 18" and it's about 100 yds from that.
Hope this helps and sorry for my initial error - thanks for helping to get it right. Liz.
