Chambered Tomb in Lower Saxony, Bremen

(Site description submitted by Martin_L , March 2009):
Chambered long barrow measuring 20m x 7m orientated North-South. The earthwork is largely eroded. As a result most of the 30 (only approximately 5 missing!) remaining kerbstones are fallen to barrow's outside and are partly covered.
The chamber is situated 2m north of barrow's centre. It most probably either was a simple (Urdolmen) or extended dolmen. One orthostat in the South and one in the East are still in situ, a capstone is collapsed into the chamber, other nearby stones are probably moved orthostats. Only an excavation could clarify the original structure. The chamber-capstone is of great interest. It is littered with cupmarks of various size. One of the most remarkable cup-marked capstones in Germany.
All in all a fascinating site, unfortunately constantly overgrown. Even the professional archeologists Krüger, Sprockhoff and Körner were faced with this problem during there examinations in the 20th century.
As more than 90% of the stones are preserved, a restoration of this site would be comparatively easy.

Remains of a burial chamber.... Just two of the uprights seem to be close to original position.

One stone with some 10 cup marks.... Somebody had marked six of them by applying some pennies.

Nahrendorf Steingrab 2
Nahrendorf Steingrab 2 submitted by Martin_L : From the North. K=Kerbstones, the orthostats of the chamber are tilted towards chambers' outside. The large capstone which probably only is halfways visible partly collapsed into the chamber. Possibly as a result of historic "activities". The stone marked W1 possibly is a fallen orthostat, but as only the top is visible this cannot be stated with certainty. The chambered long barrow is m... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Nahrendorf Steingrab 2 submitted by Martin_L : Southern half of the long barrow. Even outside growing season it is difficult to capture all details of this largely complete, but rather inaccessible site. "K" marks several kerbstones, which are largely embedded into earthwork of the eroded barrow. The chamber is visible at centre background. Chambered long barrow measuring 20m x 7m orientated North-South. The earthwork is largely eroded.... (Vote or comment on this photo)
