Hyampolis Sanctuary of Artemis and Apollo
Hyampolis Sanctuary of Artemis and Apollo submitted by Antonios : The temple is in the middle of nowhere and hard to locate because of the growth. Nearby is the prehistoric fortification of Hyampolis. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Sanctuary in Central Greece.
Eight temples have been excavated at this site, dating from the Mycenaean to the Archaic period. The final temple, built in about 570 BCE and measuring 44 metres by 18 metres which had 14 by 6 columns, was destroyed by the Persians in 480 BCE.

There is a smaller temple to Apollo dated to the 6th Century BCE just south of it which measured 26 metres by 14 metres which had 11 by 6 Doric columns.

Note: Recent research suggests that this sanctuary was that of the renowned oracle of Apollo at Abai, and not that of Apollo and Artemis of Hyampolis, as had previously been argued

"Recent research at the site by W.-D. Niemeier and his team suggests that the sanctuary was in fact that of the renowned oracle of Apollo at Abai, and not that of Apollo and Artemis of Hyampolis, as had previously been argued. Since 2003 Niemeier and his team have focused on the South Temple where an exceptional sequence of eight temples from the Mycenaean to the Archaic period has been excavated".

Maps seem to indicate that Hyampolis and Abai are not in Attica, but rather in Phthiotis province.

Here is Hyampolis' location:
38.596313,22.905414

Here is a link to an excellent archaeological plan view of the Hyampolis area including ancient Abai.

But the famous Apollonian Oracle of Abai is slightly to the west of these two, about 1km east of the town of Kalapodi on the old road through town.
Here is its location:

Thanks for this, Ivan. It appears that you're right about the placement of the Apollonian Oracle of Abai which is now understood/suspected to be here at Kalapodi.
So, the Hyampolis Sanctuary of Artemis and Apollo is possibly the temple on the spur between Abai and Hyampolis, as you mentioned in your comment on Antonios' photo of this site.

So the road sign at the site (shown in Street View above) is incorrect! I suppose we should change the name of this page to Apollonian Oracle of Abai at Kalapodi.

Are there photos of the Mycenaean phase at Kalapodi?

Wikimedia has a set of good photos of the true Hyampolis here:

There is some debate about this, since there are two temples at Kalapodi:
"There are, however, better reasons to identify the Kalapodi temenos as the sanctuary of Artemis Elaphebolos [...] it is likely that we have a sanctuary dedicated to two gods. Accordingly the excavators refer to Kalapodi as the sanctuary of Artemis and Apollo".
The Folds of Parnassos: Land and Ethnicity in Ancient Phokis by Jeremy McInerney.

It's probably best to leave them as they are for the time being until some more definitive information comes along.

Very good, except that the name of this page is incorrect either way: these are both pictures of Kalapodi, not Hyampolis which is a fair distance away, too far away to reasonably call this page Hyampolis, IMO. Hyampolis is in the next valley to the east. I think it would be better to replace "Hyampolis Sanctuary of Artemis and Apollo" as this page's title with "Kalapodi" or "Kalapodi temple", and then list "Hyampolis Sanctuary of Artemis and Apollo" and "Appolonian Oracle of Abai" as 'alternate names'.

I realize there may be some nomenclature argument for leaving the page title as is (in that people may already be familiar with the possibly misplaced names), but I think it is far more important to be geographically correct for MP. Someday the site's ancient name may be officially established, but the site will always be in Kalapodi. In other words, Kalapodi would be the most accurate and unchanging search term.
