Ayasuluk Hill submitted by AlexHunger : Location of ancient Azawa city during the time of the Hittites. There is now a Byzantine/turkish fortress on the site as well as the remains of a 4th century CE basilica. There were recent excavations which found the ancient fortifications as well as Mycanean artifacts when these carved out an enclave between Ephesus and Dydima. A small tholos an ceramics were found here. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Settlement in Izmir Province, Turkey

Under the 8th century CE Byzantine/11 century CE Turkish fortress and 4th CE basilica of St John, there are remains earlier remains of fortifications from the Hittite era around the middle of the second millennium BCE as well as from the Mycenaeans.
This has only been found out since 2000.
Cylinder seals indicate the site was Apasa, part of the Arzawa region, which was a Hittite seafaring vassal state which later turned on them around 1200 BCE during the so called Sea People invasions which also troubled the Egyptians.
The Mycenaeans also appear to have carved out a small zone from here to Didyma, as is evidenced by a small tholos and Mycenaean ceramics at this location. About 1050 BC the Hill was captured by Greek settlers under the legendary Androclus and began to be called Ephesus.
In the next couple of years, local archaeologists will dig inside the fortress to get to the heart of the matter.
This was the original location of Ephesus before it moved out to the Roman era location several kilometres away. It is however very close to the site of the Ephesus Temple of Artemis.
