Round Cairn in Derbyshire

Bee Low is a large Bronze Age round cairn situated beside the minor road that links Parsley Hay and Bakewell, known locally as Back Lane. Unfortunately it has no formal public access.

Bee Low was excavated by Thomas Bateman in 1843. Opening the Bateman found that it was ‘impossible to excavate it in a proper manner, owing to the trees growing upon the sides’. Instead of digging his usual tunnel from the edge of the mound inwards, he was forced to sink a hole down the centre of the mound where he discovered a few fragments of human bone along with a small flint arrowhead and half a dozen horse’s teeth and a cremation accompanied by a chevron patterned beaker.

Thomas was obviously not satisfied with this first afternoon’s work as he returned to the Low for a second investigation almost eight years later on the 3rd May when they discovered a number of other burials, one accompanied by a Beaker.

Pastscape monument no. 308642.
