h_fenton visited on 6th May 2011 - their rating: Access: 4 Trenches from archaeological excavations not backfilled, site looks a mess. Difficult to interpret what is at this site due to trenches everywhere. Lack of spoil heaps suggests to me there there was no spoil to backfill the trenches because it was probably tipped over the cliff.

Bronze Age (incl beakers); Iron Age; Medieval (from 1100 AD); Neolithic; Post Roman, period uncertain; Post-Medieval (from 1560); Recent (20th Century)
Promontory fort; multi-phase site with a scooped platform site on N side; a double-palisade on W entrance with associated gateslot; a large timber-built gateway with gateslot and remains of large oak timbers still in situ in post-holes; remains of houses of different phases; an industrial area with working bowls and hearths, with a complete crucible found beside one of the hearths. A vitrified timber-laced rampart, possibly double on the W side and single in the N; some evidence of a Pictish structure; two flat-bottomed ditches which may belong to the Pictish phase; a 12thC house structure on the Knoll; remains of a medieval castle/hall house with cobbled courtyard and later kitchen wing to the E; a 17th-18th century Fort Fiddes with surviving defence of earthen banks; a 19thC bowling green and a 20thC coastal observation post from the last wars. The larger flat area of the promontory has been ploughed in the 19th and early 20thC according to an estate map. A number of trenches were back-filled after excavation, the remainder were left open at the request of the landowner.

Cullykhan
Cullykhan submitted by golux : Deil's Lum cave is visible from Cullykhan as a large hole in the hillside seen to the west. This photo was taken at low tide and as you can see you would need a canoe and a reckless spirit to get through to the other side! (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Visited Cullykhan in Sept. There should be an information board on site to explain what to look for on the ground.

Not only is this the site of numerous former fortifications crowded onto a tiny headland but it and the next promontory to the west are each undermined by a cave which extends right through to the other side. Both caves have in the past collapsed repeatedly and are full of loose rocks making them hazardous (and impassable except at high tide). The cave in the next promontory is called the Deils Lum (Devil's Chimney) due to the effect produced by spray shooting out of the cave like smoke; it is clearly visible from Cullykhans as a large hole in the next hillside to the west.

The preferred name for this site is Cuulykhan.

Fort Fiddes refers to the later medieval fortification.
