Ancient Village or Settlement in Coconino County, Arizona.
A Sinagua culture village built in the late 1000's and occupied for about two hundred years. Finds indicate the people were in a trading network and the village saw what may have been luxury items like shell jewelry from the California Coast and Macaws from Mexico.

Elden is on National Forest land and may be visited during daylight hours any time of the year. The Pueblo is still being excavated and the walls stabilized. The public may participate in excavations several days a year.

Public Dig at Flagstaff Arizona Ancient Pueblo by bat400 on Monday, 21 May 2007
(User Info | Send a Message)
A somewhat flippant article from the Arizona Republic:

"The stock image of archaeology, that of a learned professional using a small trowel and paint brush to methodically uncover artifacts, seems at odds with this fact: The great unwashed masses are invited to a working archaeological site near Flagstaff where they may dig away.

"The Elden Pueblo site is believed to have been home of hundreds of Sinagua people about 800 years ago. Today, the ruins sit just north of the Flagstaff Mall and butt up against a state highway.

"A few times a year, the public is invited to help dig up artifacts at the site in the Coconino National Forest. Free public field days are scheduled for Sunday, June 24, July 28 and Aug. 18.

"This isn't faux archaeology. The professionals don't believe they have excavated all the significant finds at the ruins. The program, one of a handful like it in the country, is a way to get the public more interested in archaeology, said Lisa Edmonson, program manager for Elden Pueblo. 'It puts a whole new spin on it when you get to touch it and be a part of it and see how it's done,' she said.

Edmonson said the day begins with a tour of the site, followed by a lesson on how to dig. After that, the amateurs are given tools and work under the supervision of a professional. Most beginners last only an hour or so.

"It's pretty tiring," Edmonson said. "But if they want to stay all day, we won't stop them."
