Mawgan in Meneage
Mawgan in Meneage submitted by maengurta : Inscribed stone on Mawgan village green. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Inscribed stone on village green at Mawgan in Meneage on the Lizard, this is a 6 foot 9 high granite stone with latin inscription reading "CNEGUMI FILI GENAIVS".

Listed in Meyn Mamvro's guide to mid-Cornwall as a Roman milepost it later had an early Medieval crosshead carved on top presumably severing a couple of foot off the top. Nowadays the crosshead is long gone and the inscription only faintly legible. This stone reminds me somewhat of the famous Men Scryfa but in a more domestic setting. Highly likely to be a reused menhir and well worth a visit.

Mawgan in Meneage submitted by knap : Mawgan-in-Meneage menhir. This isn't an easy site to find as there are a few Mawgan's across Kernow and it's quite out-back... I think it's best to head towards Goonhilly from Helston - you can also see the immense Halligye Fogou and the splendid Dry Tree Menhir within a few miles of each other, all well worth a visit.
