St Michael's Well, Alnwick submitted by jamesrattue

Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Northumberland.
This public water-spout - described on a modern plaque as 'St Michael's Wishing Well' - appears to be ancient, but it's difficult to tell!

There is a large trough into which the water spills from a Gothic column topped by a statue of St Michael slaying a dragon (his spear is definitely a modern addition). A small door on the side gives access to the pump, presumably. The well has a very decayed inscription which seems to record its restoration by the Alnwick Chamberlains in 1765, though I wonder whether most of the structure, which at first glance seems to be medieval, might date from that time. Although Alnwick has a lot of named wells and springs, this one isn't recorded in any of the sources of information on Northumberland wells known to me. The lane beside the pump is Michael Well Lane, and the site is at the top of the busy market place in the town centre.
