CLICKIMIN BROCH

People have lived alongside and interacted with this well-preserved broch for over a millennia. The broch tower still stands to an impressive height and the whole area around the site is enclosed by a stout wall. Once inside, a blockhouse rises up in front of the broch itself (like a massive ancient bollard!). To the west of the broch tower are the remains of a number of different structures dating from around 1000 BC to 500 AD. The site is located on the shore of Clickimin Loch, although from certain angles, it appears to be rising out of the water.

DON’T MISS
A pair of footprints sculpted into a stone on the causeway to the broch. Could this be an early medieval site for inaugurating local kings?

WHAT KIND OF DAY OUT SHOULD I EXPECT?
Adventurous – Clickimin Broch is just one of many amazing places in Shetland. Rent a car and hop between sites before heading to the Shetland Museum & Archives to chat to the staff and volunteers about local finds.

Clickimin is a good example of an Iron Age broch tower with associated secondary buildings. Originally built on an island in a small loch (now diminished by silting and drainage) and approached by a stone causeway, the structure contains a later wheelhouse. It is situated within a walled enclosure and, unusually for brochs, features a large "blockhouse" between the opening in the enclosure and the door of the broch itself. Another unusual feature is a stone slab featuring sculptured footprints, located in the causeway approaching the site. In northern and western UK such stones are often associated with kingship rituals. The structure was much restored in the mid-1800s.

FYI: Both Historic Scotland signs at the broch spell it as "Clickimin," not Clickhimin.

Historic Scotland urged to give broch visitor numbers by Andy B on Tuesday, 18 March 2008
(User Info | Send a Message)
A challenge is being laid down for Historic Scotland to come forward with visitor numbers to the Clickimin Broch in Lerwick after hopes access to the monument could be improved were apparently quashed.

Members of the Lerwick Community Council were told in a letter from the agency the small amount of visitors the monument receives makes the provision of improved parking unsustainable.

The broch proves popular with coach-loads of tourists who visit Lerwick from the many cruise ships that berth at the harbour during the summer months.

The coaches are forced to mount the pavement close to the broch, although some have been known to park down Westerloch itself.

Hopes had been high the SIC might convert part of the pavement near the Westerloch junction to accommodate the coach tours.

But the council has already come back to say it can offer non-financial support only.

Now, Historic Scotland has replied as well, claiming visitor numbers to the broch don't justify the expense.

The letter sparked a call from members - attending a meeting at the Town Hall on Monday night - to write back to regional works manager of Historic Scotland, Gavin Douglas, to ask for clarification on how many visitors the broch attracts.

A pair of petrosomatoglyph footprints are on a stone in the causeway leading to the Broch - anyone know anything about them?
