Sister's Fountain
Sister's Fountain submitted by cazzyjane : Sister's Fountain, a beautiful well said to have sprung from the earth at the spot where Joseph of Arimathea struck the ground with his staff to find water to drink. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This elaborate structure was erected over a spring in the 19th century and named Sisters Fountain because the owners nieces liked to play in its vicinity. The spring is reputed to have gushed forth from a spot where Joseph of Arimathea struck the ground with his staff.

Park in the County Gate carpark on the A39. From the information kiosk cross the A39 and turn left to join the County Gate to Culbone track. Pass through a high gate and soon the way is steep and rough down to where the track forks. Take the right hand fork and very soon the well will be down on your left. The ranger at the information kiosk was very helpful.

Despite having a map, instructions and even a small signpost we managed to miss the small gate going down to this well and ended up on a very steep path going down having followed the A39 for a distance, we saw the Roman fortlet, but didn't get to the bottom as it was slippery, narrow and difficult.

Very disappointed to miss it, so for anyone else intending to visit, the gate looks like a fence and is very overgrown with tall plants and the kiosk is no longer occupied.

Looks dry in these photos but absolute torrents of water emerging when visited last week, more than filling all the basins at the spring and cascading down to a large reservoir below. 'Fountain' is right!
