new book soon to appear on Megalithic Jordan!

Megalithic Jordan; an introduction and field guide

About the book

Whereas hundreds of books have been written about Megalithic structures as encountered in (different parts of) Europe, it is striking that not a single comprehensive publication has ever been devoted to this phenomenon in any part of the Middle East. Admittedly, many travelers, archeologists and others paid attention to this issue, already back in the 19th century. Subsequently, a wealth of specialized articles can be found, mainly dealing with individual sites; however not a single comprehensive publication has ever been written for a larger, interested, public.

Jordan, as part of the Levant, has probably the most varied collection of megalithic monuments in the Middle East, ranging from thousands of dolmens to other megalithic phenomena, and in particular standing stones (orthostats or menhirs). Dolmens can clearly be put in a Levantine burial context, which is linked to the Caucasus through Turkey and continues all the way to Yemen (and into Ethiopia!). Standing stones, on the other hand, seem to be more difficult to classify in relation to their function, context and (possible) dates. All the same, one can distinguish between the ‘classical’ menhir - a lone monolith, and groupings of (often smaller) standing stones, often clearly set in a cult context. This last group also occurs in Sinai, Negev and Saudi Arabia, although it appears in many variations.

The aim of the author is to provide information to a broader public about these archaeological structures, both through a presentation of different aspects of Megalithic culture in Jordan and through a field guide to the main sites. The book is therefore composed of two parts, an extended introduction (with sub-chapters) and a guide to the 25 most important dolmen and/or standing stones sites. This second part will include not only a description of each site but also information (including GPS coordinates) on how to get there, as well as references to related literature. The book will also include at the end a more comprehensive list of specialized literature on the subject in the Levant as well as an index.

It will include many photographs by the author, some of sites which have never been recorded or photographed before. A number of pictures have been made by a young and very talented Jordanian professional photographer, Sima Zureikat. It will also have some older photos (19th century and disappeared megaliths), as well as maps indicating the sites. The book will include an avant-propos by HRH Prince Hasan bin Talal of Jordan. It will be published in Jordan by the American Center for Oriental Research (ACOR) in the course of 2008.

About the author

The author is a senior Dutch diplomat who has been stationed in several countries and was Ambassador in Jordan between 2003-2007. He wrote several articles on diplomacy, archaeology, as well as 18th century Dutch drawings. Together with Professor Zeidan Kafafi of the Yarmouk University in Jordan he contributed in 2005 with an article on Megalithic Jordan to Mediterranean Archaeology and Archaeometry, Vol 5, Nr 2, pp 5-22.
