Flytippers ruin one of Wales' most beautiful views; dumping huge amounts of waste by bat400 on Wednesday, 16 February 2022
(User Info | Send a Message)
coldrum sends:

The site, which offers breathtaking vistas and is of historical importance, has been used as a rubbish bin. A shocking amount of rubbish has been dumped on top of one of Wales' most breathtaking view points.

The piles of flytipped waste were discovered on Gelligaer Common - the site of a Bronze Age burial mound and dubbed by Cadw 'a remarkable archaelogical landscape'- by a shocked family who'd visited it over the weekend.

Upon arriving they found the historic upland moor, which is north of Bargoed and offers amazing panoramic vistas of the Taf and Rhymney valleys, strewn with everything from sofas and kitchen appliances to mattresses and binbags bursting with old clothes and rotting food.

"Me, the wife and the children went up on Sunday for a walk but what we found was unbelievable," said the local dad-of-two who stumbled across the mess.
"It felt terrible to see such a beautiful area ruined like that, and to have to explain to my kids what on Earth would possess someone to do such a thing. ... "Someone with a van must have made several trips to drop it all off - I just can't understand how driving all that way is easier than just taking your rubbish to a designated council tip.
.... "It makes me sad that some people have so little respect for the countryside around them."

Gelligaer Common is also home to a memorial stone dating back the late 16th/early 17th century and the remnants of an old Roman road which originally ran all the way from Brecon to Cardiff and linked forts in places such as Penydarren and Caerphilly.

The nearby Carn Bugail burial cairn, under the huge stone mound of which the dead were once entombed, is also linked to the legend of King Arthur.

A spokesman for Caerphilly council said, "We take a tough stance in the war against fly tipping and we always press for a prosecution whenever evidence is found.
"Our enforcement team work hard, but there are obviously large areas of common land and open countryside in this area, which is unfortunately targeted by an inconsiderate minority.
"The key message is for people to be considerate and respect our beautiful countryside, and also to be vigilant and report any sightings to the council so that we can take appropriate action."

Carn bugail is not the site from which King Arthur and Cai played dice, That site is Carn Fochriw 500yards to the North. The standing stone is called the Cefn stone.
There are more sites on Gelligaer common connected to king Arthur than there are in the rest of the U.k. Example, Dinas Norfa the place that king Arthur feasted after his battle with king Brychan, the Cefn stone that once had the inscription Dubricious on its side,(Saint Dubricius ( Welsh Saint Dyfrig) was the man that crowned Arthur, King).

If we are to keep these historical sites for our children's enjoyment,We need to stop any more expansion to opencast
mining in the aera.

There is a short story written about King Arthur on gelligaer common called ( The Coming of Caliburn) by Phil Carridice.

The Bugail is one of the most spectacular viewing sites in the whole of south Wales. The huge site contains many listed and un listed burrial chambers, just above the Gelligaer standing stone(knowen as cock temple by the locals) and old roman road.Reputed tobe the site where king Arthur, Cai and others played dice while waiting to resolve the kidnapping of saint Gwladys.Who's church remains are a few miles to the south of the site, just off the roman road.A very important area much abused and in great need of an upto date survey.which will sureley rate this place as great or even greater than the valley of the kings.
