In times, existed a 4th monument (Vale de Rodrigo 4) that was destroyed due to the building of a house in the property. This is a wonderful set of megalithic monuments that's really worth a visit. All of these structures were built between the beginning of the 4th and the middle of the 3rd millennium BC, thus corresponding to the chronology generally attributed to cultural horizon of the megalithic universe of Évora region. This necropolis, all together, is considered a MN – Monumento Nacional (National Monument) of Portugal since the 1st of June of 1992. VALE DE RODRIGO 1 and MENHIR Condition: 4 Ambience: 5 Access: 2 The 1st monument is formed by a well-maintained mound, involving a burial chamber of polygonal shape composed of seven pillars, as well as the respective access corridor, with about 1 m wide and 1.5 m high. The chamber also retains vestiges of coverage, built in false dome shape, subcircular, with about 6 m long and 30 m in diameter at its base. Therefore the artificial mound is very visible in the landscape in which it is inserted. On the outskirts of the tumulus is one inscultured fallen menhir.

About the menhir Condition: 4 Ambience: 4 Access: 2 Monolith carved in diorite quartz, medium-grained, not porphyritic and with a flattened ellipsoidal or stele shaped, wider in the bottom and pointed at the end. It measures 4,56m long and 1,20mx0,76m. The menhir bore engravings, obtained by pecking of lithic artifacts, some are very eroded. There are some visible dimples.

In front of the pillars are visible the foundation trenches. The bedside of the chamber consists of two pillars, whose upper halves were cut, apparently in the Roman period (tegulae were found in the fine sediment that filled the cracks). Near the northern bedside was discovered a tomb whose skeleton was not preserved. The interior of the corridor have also been used for burials. There is still visible good part of the artificial mound.

Links and Information sources (all texts written in Portuguese): - Round Barrow of Vale de Rodrigo 4 at Portal do Arqueólogo About the access There are a lot of directional sign posts by the road that should help you to get to the sites of Vale de Rodrigo, but they end up nowhere and is impossible to follow them to get to your destination. The best way to reach them is to go by a dirt road that leads to Monte das Pereiras (Latitude: 38.516319N Longitude: -8.078333W) and then you should turn left to get to the Rodrigo valley. If you are willing to do some offroad then try your chances. If you have a mountain bike it is the easier way to get to all destinations. If you like you can do all the route by foot but is a very long walk. All the sites are well marked with fences and there is always a small access door. Aditional information: - You are entering in private property but the access is possible. - The entrance to the zone of the monuments may be blocked by fences, they were essentially made to demarcate the land and not allow the escape of livestock. Usually there are spaces in the fences within these demarcated areas where the access is possible. When entering in demarcated land never forget to close the access gate of the location, you need to be very aware because cattle can escape. - There are no signs prohibiting us from entering so the access can be open but be careful when you explore every time you see this red plaques that alert you for the Hunting Zones. Remind yourself that usually hunters can only hunt at selected hunting days (Thursdays, Sundays and on public holidays). More information at DGPC. Page originally submitted by Alex Hunger.
