The Tolmen Stone (Dartmoor)
The Tolmen Stone (Dartmoor) submitted by thesabs : The Dartmoor Tolmen (Vote or comment on this photo)
The Tolmen Stone is a large boulder that lies near to the bank of the North Teign river. It has a large hole that perforates through the rock and was formed by river friction erosion. The hole is large enough for a normal sized adult to pass through and is estimated to have a diameter of 1.03m. There are also three other partially worn basins on the boulder.

One tradition states that anyone who does manage to pass through the stone will have immunity from all rheumatic disorders. This feat is not possible when the river is in full spate for obvious reasons. The name 'Tolmen' is said to derive from the Celtic tol (hole) maen (stone) - hole stone.

The Tolmen Stone (Dartmoor)
The Tolmen Stone (Dartmoor) submitted by AngieLake : On 7th August I met up with Crannog (Alison) at Batworthy Corner, and we walked to Scorhill, then visited the Tolmen Stone on our way back. Here she is getting a photo before plunging into the hole! (3 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

The Tolmen Stone (Dartmoor)
The Tolmen Stone (Dartmoor) submitted by AngieLake : This shot shows (on the opposite side of the river), the wall that encloses Batworthy newtake. If you walk from that end (Batworthy corner), you only need to follow the wall to find this stone. (Scorhill is higher up over the hill behind me, here.)

The Tolmen Stone (Dartmoor) submitted by AngieLake : Looking down at Tolmen Stone from above [on Scorhill side of river]. There was an easier way to access this stone from a point to my right.
