TheCaptain visited on 13th Oct 2019 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 4 Access: 4 From Evora it was time for my day hunting stones. Thankfully I had done much previous research, otherwise I would have found it extremely difficult. I struggled to get out of the walled city of Evora, round all the one way systems etc, but eventually after finding a place to stop, where I figured out how to use the satnav, and there was no looking back! The next problem was how to locate the sites, as nothing is on any maps, and very little is signposted. However, with use of my previously prepared Google map of sites, and better phone coverage out here than most places at home, I was able to locate the road to these dolmens, where I realised that many of the roads are actually dirt and gravel tracks, and many seem to start from the main roads through gated entrances. About threequarters of a km along the dirt track to Barrocal, and I see the old windmill and a place I can park, and then I see the dolmen just in the field to the right. There is a path to it, and it is well sited on the top of a hillock, a nicely complete dolmen with remains of its entrance passageway. It is not very picturesque today, grey skies threatening to rain, and the ground covered in scrub.

The Anta do Barrocal 1 (Anta Herdade do Barrocal 1) is found to the south of the rough lane some 40 metres into a field by an old windmill. It has a companion, Anta do Barrocal 2 (Anta Herdade do Barrocal 2) about 100 metres north west of the site sign in an open field.

Take the N380 south from Evora and turn left (east) at the crossroad which leads to Tourega in the opposite direction. This is a small, rough but drivable lane. Drive for a kilometre up this lane to reach the site sign with the dolmens either side of the road.

Restored in the 1970's these are two very nice dolmens. I visited the sites in April 2010.

The official name on the site sign for Anta do Barrocal is Anta Herdade do Barrocal 1. Its closest town is Evora and closest village Tourega.

Anta Herdade do Barrocal 2 is a couple of hundred metres away to the north west and needs a new site which I will put together shortly.

This Anta is actually located at 38.508007N -8.005624W. This is exactly one degree out but that makes 111 km difference - hence it does not show on the Meg Portal maps in the Evora area. I visited it in April 2010 and the photo matches one I took. There is another site for Anta do Barrocal (Évora) which has just a general location given which is a few kilometres from the site I visited on the Meg Portal map. I believe that these two sites are one and the same. See my comments posted on Anta do Barrocal (Évora).
