COVA DOLMEN DEL REC DE LA QUARENTENA II
Situation: Within the municipality of Roses, in an area called «Els Guills del Mas Marés», on the upper part of the slope of the stream «Quarentena».

History: This monument was discovered by Esteve Martinez i Castey and the Pàramo family during an excursion in the area in 1998. At the beginning of 1999 the GESEART confirmed that, indeed, it was a new megalithic monument. During April 2000 the grave was excavated and restored. In May of the same year during the «IV Feste Megalitica de Roses» it was inaugurated.

Architecture: This is a cave-dolmen formed by a natural cave an artificial corridor of slabstones, united by 2 dry stack walls. The cave, with an orientation towards south-west 236º+/-10° is situated in an area where gneiss and quartz are predominant. It has an irregular elliptical shape. Of the corridor 3 slabstones remain, 1 triangular one of quartz, quite eroded and 2 rectangular ones of gneiss, obtained by working their edges and upper parts. This grave was closed with a wall next to it, from which a stela-shaped menhir was raised, now re-erected, indicating the presence of a funeral monument. The space between the grave itself and the corridor is closed with 2 dry slack walls. Remains of the tumulus that covered the tomb are visible on both sides of the corridor. Also visible are several courses on the mountain slope in the front of the corridor. It is fourth funeral monument of this type found in Catalunya, after «Tossal Gros» in Torroella de Montgrí (Baix Empordà), the «Cova de la Masia» in Torruelles de Foix (Alt Penedès) and the «Riera Quarentena I», next to this one, forming an union point between the 4 megalithic tombs and the 2 menhirs of «Puig de l'Home» - «Casa Cremada» and the 4 graves of «Pla de les Gates» - «Puig Alt».

Archaeological remains. During archaeological excavation process several ceramic fragments of various periods were found in the grave and the corridor, consistent with use over several centuries. On the superficial levels fragments of medieval-modern ceramics were found and on a lower level several fragments on the neolithic-calcolithis (4500-3800 BP) and the final bronze age (3100-2600 BP), the only remainders of the dowry that accompanied the dead buried in this megalithic tomb.
