Pipers (nr Merry Maidens)
Pipers (nr Merry Maidens) submitted by Bladup : The wonderful South West Piper. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A pair of large standing stones, outliers of the Merry Maidens stone circle, the legend being that they were the pipers playing for the dancers there who were also turned to stone. The Pipers are the tallest of Cornwall's remaining standing stones, the northeastern being 4.6m (15ft) tall, the southwestern 4.1m (13.5ft) tall.

The two stones are at positions:
Northeastern Piper at: SW43552482
Southwestern Piper at: SW43482476

Note: Stories from the Sky - Carolyn Kennett talks about the Milky Way and how it inspired ancient peoples, with mesmerising music from flautist Rikk Smith - a quality new video - details in the comments on our page

Stories from the Sky video with talks and music with Carolyn Kennett and flautist Rikk Smith

Mossy Crow write: The ‘Stories from the Sky’ video is ready to buy and view from our online shop at https://mossycrow.co.uk. Our guest speaker Archaeoastronomer Carolyn Kennett talks about the Milky Way and how it inspired ancient peoples and inspired their beliefs and stories. We have mesmerising music from musician Rikk Smith - including the extraordinary sounds of the deep-bass Slovakian Fujara flute. The Mossy Matrix team has mixed the talk with slides, videos and stills and made it into a little 3 part series.

Notes from a visit Sept 2013

Moving on from Mousehole, with the ultimate aim of Sennen Cove, it would be very rude not to stop off and visit the Merry Maidens and a few other surrounding ancient sites on the way.

Initially as passing through the wooded valley that leads down to Lamorna, there is of course the elusive Boleigh Fougou, which I know can be visited upon request, but is also sometimes generally open to the public. I believe it’s in the grounds of a B&B farmhouse, so I took the time to drive slowly, hopefully to spot a sign or something, of which there were many, but mainly concerning eggs, camping and suchlike. I saw nothing for the fougou, so once more that is one for another time, when I know well in advance.

On getting to the area of the Merry Maidens, we parked in a well used lay-by at the upper end of the site, and firstly walked back along the road to start at the eastern end with a look at The Pipers, two large standing stones, said to be the tallest in Cornwall. It’s somewhat strange that they should be considered as a pair, because they are a good distance from each other and in completely different fields, and from most views from the roadside cannot both be seen.

Getting into the field where they stand was not straightforward, and the fields were full of long wet grass, so we were both content with our long distance views of these fine stones. Dad said he remembered something of the legend of them playing for the dancers to be turned to stone, but did not remember that the stones were here.

Now, moving westwards from The Pipers, there was an old Gent walking along the roadside, probably a man of the road, who had a cheery smile but trouble with his speech. I think he was trying to guide us to the Merry Maidens, and also to tell us something about them, but it was hard work so we thanked him and let him wander on as we picked a load of blackberries. I noticed that as he passed by the Nun-Careg cross, he sort of bowed before it, and tapped it a couple of times with his stick before moving on, and stopping in the next field entrance.
