Chambered Tomb in Lower Saxony

Remains of a partly destroyed, large chambered tomb orientated nearly East-West. At least 17 stones are visible nowadays, but still deeply embedded into the eroded barrow. Possibly other stones are still covered. Earthwork measuring approximately 32m x 12m x 2 m.
As the situation in 2008 varies from the situation in 1929, when Sprockhoff and Schwieger examined the tomb I made a sketch plan to illustrate the current state. There were two more stones (No. 13 and 16 on the sketch) visible in 2008. According to Sprockhoff, none of the stones visible at the eastern end of the barrow were in situ in 1929. Judging from the current situation at least 2 of them (No. 9 and 11) are in situ. This is very interesting, as No. 11 most probably is the eastern chamber-end stone. As the western chamber-end is definitely in situ (No. 1), the length of the chamber approximately was 21m. Chambers of this size are quite common in this area. When looking at the sketch there is a noticeable gap between the 10 remaining orthostats in the West, and the 7 stones in the East. So maybe the tomb consisted of two chambers within the barrow. But as this ground-plan would be unique in this area, it is far from likely. Only an excavation could clarify this.
The site is situated in a thick wood with great ambience. It is not that far from a road, but it was one of the few sites where I needed the help of my compass to find it. A very secluded spot.

Oldendorfer Fuhrenkamp (1) submitted by Martin_L : Small basin on the westernmost orthostat. The remains of the western chamber (or western chamber part) are heavily disturbed with the capstones and several orthostats being robbed, but one might still get an idea of the general groundplan. Only small parts of several orthostats are sticking out of the eroded earthwork. March 2017 (3 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)
