Chambered Tomb near Varnhorn, Lower Saxony

(Site description submitted by Martin_L , January 2009)

Damaged, but still impressive chambered tomb. Orientation NE-SW. According to Sprockhoff et al. original clear size 7m x 1,6m.

Orthostats:
North-western long side:3 orthostats in situ, two are missing.
South-eastern long side: 2 orthostats in situ, one out of place, one or two missing.
South-western chamber end: 1 end-stone, damaged by blasting attempt slightly out of place.
North-eastern chamber end: 1 end-stone, in situ.

Capstones:
No. 1 (counting from West) is blown into 2 fragments that collapsed into the chamber.
No. 2 is nearly in situ. It has a drill hole in it, but fortunately the destruction was stopped.
No. 3 collapsed into the chamber due to blasting attempts.
No. 4 blown into pieces, only a part remained at the eastern end.

Sprockhoff, Schwieger in: Körner, G. (Ed.), Sprockhoff, E. Atlas der Megalithgräber Deutschlands, Niedersachsen-Westfalen, p. 144

Location:
1km North of Varnhorn on a small hill could "Mühlenhöhe" (~"Millhill"). The site has a very fine ambience, and is well worth a visit. As it is situated in the neighbourhood of some extremely famous megalithic tombs the site tends to be comparatively unknown. Translation of “Mühlensteine” is “Millstones”.

AlexHunger wrote in 2005:
In woods between Varnhorn and Thölstedt. Chambered tomb consisting of 8 at least 2 uprights and 3 cap stones, which have largely collapsed into the chamber. Other stones can not be attibuted.
