Ancient Village or Settlement in Crete

Due to the Eastern end of Crete sinking, Olous is now submerged with only a few walls visible above the sea. When snorkelling though, a number of houses can be seen together with the old harbour wall. The city is Minoan and ancient writers recorded it had a population of over 40,000.

The end of a wall, in both senses of the word. I have heard many stories of divers bringing up artifacts (illegally) and have seen the remains of amphora in this area, but I have not heard of any archaeological surveys of the underwater area.

Snorkelling past the harbour wall (on the right) to enter the harbour. Minoan cities normally had two harbours facing in different directions to facilitate sailing with different winds, but no-one has ever found Olous' second harbour.

Looking inside the harbour towards the now submerged harbour wall. On the seabed can be seen a line of stones set into the floor. Whether these were once above sea level or were part of the harbour floor I do not know.
