Cup and Ring marks / Rock Art in Norway

Another bronze age rock art site on the Østfold "Prehistoric Road". There are several panels here set amongst some burial mounds.

Additional Information submitted by Drew Parsons in September 2011: There are a number of rock carving sites in the vicinity of Begby, some by the shopping mall, some by the school and a series of panels to the north of the village (those illustrated here) with a walkway and excellent site signs to interpret the site. The carvings date from the Bronze Age and are between 3700 and 2600 years old. In those days the coast was a lot nearer to Begby than it is today, so the carvings would have been close to the sea. Carvings of ships are frequently seen on the panels and they are often set in water flows on the rocks, the appropriate location for ships. Other carvings represent animals, carts, people and perhaps gods and heros. Some carvings are of indeterminate objects and indeed whilst much of the interpretation is based on knowledge of Bronze Age culture, some must be speculative. The carvings are painted red by approved archaeologists to make them readily visible to visitors and academic staff, and to help folk see them readily so that they are not trodden on accidentally. In addition the colouring prevents folk who sometimes unthinkingly chalk in carvings to get a better photograph as happens at some other sites in Europe. The paint used is water based and so does not harm the site whereas chalk may do so. Begby is part of the Oldtidsveien or Prehistoric Road on route 110 from the E6 at Skjeberg through to Fredrikstad. There are excellent sites to visit along this short piece or road.

Begby Helleristninger submitted by Martin_L : Part of a main panel with carts, boats, animals and other stylized bronze age carvings. The antropomorphs are carved in a quite local style. The lighting was great to create some lens flares. Scan of diapositive taken in 1999 (Vote or comment on this photo)

Begby Helleristninger
Begby Helleristninger submitted by Martin_L : An unusual design, an adorant, a cup- and ring-mark and some cup-marks. (with scale 10cm). There are several rock carving sites at Begby. This is from one of the less weathered panels. The colour is used to ease visibilty at tourist sites. This is a good way to prevent unauthorized chalking. (Vote or comment on this photo)
