Sievern Buelzenbett
Sievern Buelzenbett submitted by krautrock : Sievern Buelzenbett. Holger Rix and I were stunned about this impressive tomb. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A most remarkable site in many respects. Like the Karlsteine and Lübbensteine, it is one of the most well-known and most visited sites in Lower Saxony, but it was probably the very first to be pictured in print, as early as 1604. Its 3 capstones are of enormous size, with one measuring about 4 x 3 m.

The middle capstone is split in two and has fallen into the chamber.

One legend has it that Charlemagne (“Karl der Große”, after whom the Karlsteine are named) was responsible; another that the Devil was angered at being driven away by Christian priests. Personal inspection offers a more mundane reason: like so many others, attempts had been made to use the stones as a quarry, as a line of wedge holes can be seen.

A drawing made in 1755 shows the middle capstone in its split form, so the attempt to remove the stones for building material can be dated to before that time.

Legend says that its name originates from a giant or heathen king (“Bilse’s bed”).

Suggested parking: at the official Pipinsburg parking area (N53.65792 E8.60849) just off the federal road, north of Sievern.

Orientation: roughly NW-SE, bordering stones laid in a trapezoidal shape

Estimated age: roughly 2500 BC

Sievern Buelzenbett submitted by Martin_L : Overview looking East. Showing 30m of the enclosure and the massive 8m x 4,5m chamber. The central capstone is damaged by blasting attempts and split in halves. The earthwork is largely removed/eroded. March 2010 (Vote or comment on this photo)

Sievern Buelzenbett submitted by Martin_L : The massive 8m x 4,5m chamber viewed from the South-west. Several kerb-stones of the slightly trapezoidal (Sprockhoff et al. Atlasblatt 2 and 3) enclosure 35m x 8,5m (West)-7m(East) also are visible. March 2010 (Vote or comment on this photo)

Sievern Buelzenbett
Sievern Buelzenbett submitted by Martin_L : Panoramic view from the West. To the left and the right of the massive chamber some enclosure kerb-stones are visible. The westernmost capstone seems to be the largest, measuring appr. 4,1m x 3,2m. The broken central capstone probably was similar sized. March 2010. (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Sievern Buelzenbett
Sievern Buelzenbett submitted by Martin_L : Close-up of the chamber showing the eastern part. The easternmost capstone is the smallest, measuring appr. 4m x 2,5m. The chamber is more than halfway filled with earth. Clear height reduced to 1m and less. March 2010 (Vote or comment on this photo)

Sievern Buelzenbett
Sievern Buelzenbett submitted by Martin_L : Overview looking West. Showing the western 20m of the long barrow enclosure and the massive 8m x 4,5m chamber. The central capstone is damaged by historic quarry attempts and split in halves. A second line of tool marks is clearly visible. The earthwork is largely removed/eroded. Unfortunately all stones of the entrance section are robbed (the gap in the row of kerbstones just West of the central ... (2 comments)

(stonefriend krautrock as a comparison) Another comparison: The also famous capstone of the Brutkamp in Albersdorf (said to be the biggest in Schleswig Holstein) is about 23t. The 4m x 3m x 1.2m capstone here should be about 38 tons !
